Sunday 10:00am WLEX TV Channel 18

It is requested that children under the age of five stay in our nursery
so there will be no distractions during the preaching of the Gospel.

HYMN FOR THE DAY

Not saved are we by trying
From self can come no aid
‘Tis on the blood relying
Once for our ransom paid
‘Tis looking unto Jesus
The Holy One and Just
‘Tis His great work that saves us
It is not try, but trust.

No deeds of ours are needed
To make Christ’s merit more
No frames of mind or feelings
Can add to His great store
‘Tis simply to receive Him
The Holy One and Just
‘Tis only to believe Him
It is not try, but trust.

(Tune: “The Church’s One Foundation” p. 186)

We know that Solomon was a child of God. He wrote three books in the Bible. But the end of his life was filled with shame and disgrace. It was said that “His heart was not perfect with the Lord his God as was the heart of David his Father” (I Kings 11:4), and “Solomon did evil in the sight of the Lord, and went not fully after the Lord as did David his father” (I Kings 11:6). He had been so greatly blessed of God, but how far he fell! Where did his descent begin? We are given a hint in I Kings 6:38- 7:1. In speaking of Solomon building the temple, and then building his own house we read, “So was he seven years in building it (the temple). But Solomon was building his own house thirteen years, and he finished all his house.” Actions speak louder than words, and his actions let us know what he gave the most attention to.

The importance of hearing the Gospel cannot be overstated, because “faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God” (Rom 10:17). One of the names of the Gospel is “The hearing of faith” (Gal. 3:5). The Lord said on numerous occasions, “He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.” Not everybody has ears to hear! In Luke 6:27, the Lord said, “I say unto you that hear.” He only speaks to those who hear. Hearing is an evidence of knowing and being of God. “He that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us” (I John 4:6). We are also warned of becoming dull of hearing (Heb. 5:11). In the parable of the sower, where the Lord gives us the four types of hearers, He says in Luke 8:18, “Take heed how ye hear!” Not only are we to be careful what we hear, but how we hear! “Let every man be swift to hear and slow to speak” (James 1:19). It takes just as much grace to hear the Gospel as it does to preach the Gospel! May we all say with Samuel, “Speak Lord, thy servant heareth.” Guard against becoming dull in hearing!

Grace and Mercy
Grace is God’s unmerited, unearned favor…to give someone a gift they do not deserve. Mercy is God’s pity…not giving someone the wrath and judgment they do deserve. Two totally separate attributes of God… but where there is one, there is always the other.... “For in my wrath I smote thee, but in my favour have I had mercy on thee”(Isaiah 60:10). God’s favour (grace) to chosen sinners is revealed when He has mercy on them for Christ’s sake. Christ is the grace and mercy of God. The gift of grace is the gift of Christ’s righteousness imputed and imparted to every believer. The gift of mercy is the precious blood of Christ, taking my sin and dying on the cross in my place.
Grace and mercy always travel together, for they are both found in one place…the Lord Jesus Christ. Come to Christ in faith, simply trusting Him alone as your salvation. In simply believing on Christ, God’s grace and mercy has been given to you. – Brian DuFour

The Foundation and the Building Are One
The Holy Spirit’s role in redemption stands in relation to the Person and Work of Christ, as a building to its foundation. As the edifice is the fulfillment of the purpose for which the foundation was laid, so the work of the Spirit is the completion of that for which Christ became the Surety of His people. In the same way that the structure cannot stand where there is no foundation, there would be no being born of the Spirit where life had not first been guaranteed by the blood of Christ. Just as the true worthiness of the foundation would never be honored if nothing was constructed on it, Christ crucified will never be glorified in His people if the Holy Spirit does not make us new creatures in Christ Jesus. In fact, the greater the building and the longer it endures, the more the foundation is proven and honored. Even so, the more miraculous the Spirit’s mysterious work is revealed to be in the Scriptures, the more Christ will be glorified in our eyes, the unshakable and immovable Ground of our eternal salvation! - Mark Daniel
