It is requested that children under the age of five stay in our nursery
so there will be no distractions during the preaching of the Gospel.
HYMN FOR THE DAY
Look upon me, Lord, I pray Thee
Let Thy Spirit dwell in mine
Thou hast sought me, Thou hast bought me
Take my heart and make it Thine.
Nought I ask for , nought I strive for
But Thy grace so rich and free
This Thou givest by the Saviour
He hath all things who hath Thee.
Precious is the name of Jesus
Who can half its worth unfold
Far beyond angelic praises
Sweetly sung to harps of gold.
Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah
Pilgrim through this barren land
I am weak, but Thou art mighty
Hold me with Thy powerful hand.
(Tune: “Jesus Calls Us” p. 374)

WHO CAN TAME THE TONGUE?
“The tongue can no man tame: it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison”
(James 3:8). Obviously, no man can tame the tongue. I have tried to tame mine,
and out come words of criticism, hurt, and self-justification. But God can
and does tame the tongue. I cannot tame my tongue, but I want my tongue to
be tamed by the grace of God! Lord, tame my tongue, so that the words that
come out of my mouth are true, gracious, kind, and encouraging. Somebody once
said that everything that passes through our lips ought to go through these
three checkpoints. (1) Is it true? (2) Is it necessary to say? (3) Is it kind?
When, by the grace of God, our words go through those three checkpoints, we
are speaking with a tamed tongue. Tamed by the grace of God.

FOLLOWING THE LORD FULLY
It was said of Solomon, “And Solomon did evil in the sight of the Lord,
and went not fully after the Lord as did David his father.” (I Kings
11:6) David was a man after God’s own heart. He went fully after the
Lord. He held nothing back. David was a sinner, like you and I, but unlike
Solomon, he went after the Lord fully, and did not allow the things of this
world to turn away his heart. He was like Caleb, of whom God said, “My
servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me
fully” (Numbers 14:24). The same Spirit that enabled both Caleb and
David to follow the Lord fully….the Holy Spirit, can enable you and
me to follow Him fully. He says, “Follow Me.” The only way to
follow him is to follow him fully, regardless of cost or consequences. May
God the Holy Spirit enable us to do so.
SUBSTITUTION IS THE GOSPEL
Particular redemption. Limited Atonement. Definite Atonement. Effectual Atonement.
These are all words used to describe the atoning work of Christ on the cross.
He died for a particular people. His intention to save was limited to the
elect. His atonement was with a definite purpose for a definite people. His
atonement was effectual. All that He died for must be saved. These terms are
all well and good in their place, but a better word is plain old substitution.
All of these terms point to a real, substitutionary death on the cross. Substitution
is the Gospel. To deny, water down, or omit in our preaching the particular,
limited, definite, effectual death of Christ on the cross….ie….substitution….is
to deny, water down, or omit the Gospel of Christ. The meaning of substitution
is so simple, adjectives are not even needed to describe it.

We do not find rest, hope, nor comfort in our faith. BUT IN CHRIST. If you
will give careful thought to that statement, it will be of great help to you.
Faith is not a foundation, a refuge, nor a source of help. Faith is a means,
a look, an empty hand. It is Christ Who is our refuge, Who protects from every
storm. He is our rock on which we build. He is our source of every mercy and
our only plea. My faith may be weak or weaker, but He cannot fail. If all
my debts have been paid by my Surety, I don’t have to be ashamed to
come before God. The praise and credit goes not to my boldness and faith but
to my gracious benefactor! I am not debt-free because I believe (though I
do, and that faith united me to Him) but because HE SET ME FREE AND PAID MY
DEBT. Christ is our confidence and our assurance. The moment I seek a reason
for hope in anything I do, even in the blessed grace of faith, I forfeit any
possibility of peace. “Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his
trust” (Psalms 40:4). “When Isaiah saw His glory, he spake of
Him” (John 12:41). When any man truly sees the glory of the Lord Jesus
Christ, then CHRIST BECOMES THE MESSAGE AND THE OBJECT OF FAITH. – Pastor
Henry Mahan
